Whinchat (Saxicola rubetra)

Unlike its close relative - the stonechat - the whinchat does not breed in the Southeast of England so it's a case of trying to
see one on migration. I failed in 2010 and in spring 2011 but I finally saw my first ever whinchat in Surrey in September 2011. This beautiful female was quite distant, so I only got a couple of record shots. A few weeks later, I saw more whinchats on Cissbury Ring - again too distant for decent photos, but what lovely little birds!!
